Film stocks and why they look different
People talk about film looks as if they were styles, but the differences come from chemistry and intended use. Understanding four distinctions explains most of what you see in a stock's character, and makes it much easier to choose a look deliberately rather than by trial and error.
Negative versus reversal
Colour negative film is built for latitude: it holds detail several stops over correct exposure and is forgiving of error, which is why it dominated consumer and wedding photography. Its images are printed, which adds a second interpretive step. Reversal film — slide film — produces a positive directly, has far less latitude, and punishes overexposure severely. That difference explains the looks: negative stocks tend to have soft, gently rolled highlights and lifted shadows, while slide stocks are contrastier, more saturated, and unforgiving. If a look has deep blacks and vivid colour, it is descended from reversal; if it is soft and airy, from negative.
Daylight versus tungsten balance
Film is balanced for a specific colour temperature — around 5500K for daylight stocks, around 3200K for tungsten. Shoot a daylight stock under household bulbs and everything goes orange; shoot tungsten film outdoors and it goes blue. Photographers used this deliberately, and a great deal of the cool blue night look in cinema comes from tungsten stock shot without correction. Any simulation that offers a night look is usually reproducing this mismatch rather than adding a blue filter.
Speed, and what it costs
A film's ISO is a trade. Slower stocks — 50 to 100 — have fine grain, higher contrast and richer colour, which is why they were used for landscape and studio work. Faster stocks — 400 to 3200 — trade grain size and lower saturation for the ability to shoot indoors or handheld. The grain in a 400 stock is not a defect to be minimised; it is part of the reason those photographs feel the way they do, and pushing a stock beyond its rated speed increases both grain and contrast further.
Consumer versus professional, and why it matters
Consumer stocks were designed to flatter typical family subjects on the first try: warmer skin, boosted saturation, forgiving latitude. Professional stocks were designed to be neutral and predictable so a photographer could grade them deliberately. This is the difference between a look that makes everything feel like a holiday snapshot and one that feels like editorial photography, and it is a more useful axis for choosing a look than the brand name.
