How to Get a Super 8 Video Look on Android
To give Android video a Super 8-inspired look in GrainGleam, choose SUPER 8, record a new clip or import an existing video, then save the processed result. The look combines faded color with moving grain, frame drift, flicker, dust, and scratches. Before using it for an important moment, make a short test and check the saved file: Android exports are silent.
What the SUPER 8 look changes
SUPER 8 pairs faded, low-contrast color with an 8mm-style border and effects that change over time. Frame drift shifts the image slightly, while flicker varies its brightness; dust and scratches add moving marks. These are digital effects applied to phone footage. Real Super 8 uses physical motion-picture film in cartridges, as Kodak’s camera specifications describe. GrainGleam cannot digitize an old reel. A physical reel needs a separate film-transfer service or setup; you can then import the digital copy.
Record a new clip, from selection to saving
Allow camera access, then tap SUPER 8 in the camera strip. This switches the app to VIDEO and sets the frame to 3:4. Check that the bottom recording button is visible, compose your shot, and tap it to start. Watch for the recording timer, then tap the same button to stop. Wait for the video result before tapping Save. Keep the selected camera unchanged throughout the take: switching cameras during recording can change the button’s action and leave you unable to stop normally.
Apply the look to an existing Android video
Tap the import icon to the left of the recording button and choose one video. After it loads, select SUPER 8 and check the framing. Tap the recording button to process it; importing alone only loads the preview. The app restarts the source at the beginning and stops when it ends or your recording limit is reached. You can also stop sooner with the recording button. Review the result and tap Save. For a passage from the middle of a longer clip, trim a copy in another editor before importing.
Choose a frame that fits your footage and screen
The available ratios are 3:4, 1:1, and 9:16. The default 3:4 is portrait, unlike the horizontal 4:3 home-movie frame. Check faces, hands, and objects near the edges when importing landscape footage. A layout problem can put the bottom controls outside the visible screen on smaller displays and with the tall 9:16 viewfinder. Try 1:1 to shorten the viewfinder, then confirm that the recording button is accessible. If the controls remain hidden, use another setup for a moment you cannot repeat.
Plan for silent Android exports
GrainGleam’s Android MP4 exports contain video without an audio track. Live recording does not capture the microphone, and converting an imported video does not preserve its original audio. The REEL control can play a generated projector-style sound through the phone, but it does not add that sound to the Android export. For a clip that needs dialogue, music, or background sound, keep the original recording and combine its audio with the processed picture in another editor. For an event where voices matter, record the original with your usual camera first, then import a copy for the retro treatment.
Make everyday clips feel like a small home movie
Try a three-shot sequence: a wider view of the place, a closer view of an action, and a finishing detail. For breakfast, that might be the table, someone pouring a drink, and steam above the cup. For a walk, try the street, a person crossing the frame, and a shop-window detail. Let each action settle before stopping. Review the clips together and keep the shots that tell you something different. Use this as a creative starting point, adapting the sequence to whatever catches your attention.
Check the border and date before committing
SUPER 8 starts with the 8MM border. Use BORDER to choose NONE if you prefer an image without that decoration, and inspect the saved result. Removing the border does not remove the date. GrainGleam currently stamps video exports with the phone’s current date, including when you convert older footage. There is no working date-off control for video. If you need a clean, undated deliverable, account for that limitation before processing a whole set of clips.
Understand the free and Pro video limits
SUPER 8 is available on the free tier. The table compares the video limits: height is listed in pixels because output width changes with the selected ratio. A longer imported source stops converting at your tier’s duration limit, so inspect its ending. Pro also unlocks Settings controls such as Character, Grain, and Halation for adjusting the treatment. The app targets 24 fps and does not offer an 18 fps selector. Try the free look before deciding whether you need longer takes or more control.
Try other retro looks for the same everyday scene
If your search for a retro camera video app is broader than Super 8, GrainGleam also has the Pro cameras 16MM and TAPE VHS. The 16MM look has lifted shadows and stronger color bleed around highlights. TAPE VHS uses softer detail and smeared color for a tape-inspired treatment. These are alternative digital looks, not conversions into physical film or videotape. Compare them using the same short source clip so that the scene stays consistent. Choose the camera that suits the moment before recording, and finish and save each result before changing cameras.
Verify the saved clip before moving on
On the result screen, play the video through, then tap Save. Open the saved file in your phone’s gallery and check the beginning, ending, crop, date, and watermark. A save message can be hidden behind the result screen, so the absence of a visible confirmation does not settle whether saving worked. If gallery saving fails and a share sheet opens, complete the destination choice and check the resulting file there. Keep the source until you have confirmed the exported copy plays correctly. Do this once with a disposable test clip before processing footage you care about.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use GrainGleam as a free Super 8 video camera app?
Yes. SUPER 8 is free, with a 15-second recording limit, a 720-pixel output height, and a GrainGleam watermark. Pro raises the duration and output height and removes the watermark.
Can I add the look to videos already on my phone?
Yes. Import one video, select SUPER 8, and start recording to create the processed version. Importing alone only loads the preview; you still need to record and save the result.
Why is there no sound in my exported video?
Android exports have no audio track. Neither the source video’s audio nor the generated REEL sound is included. Keep your original if you plan to restore its sound in another editor.
Does SUPER 8 mean the app records at 18 fps?
No. SUPER 8 names the visual treatment. GrainGleam targets 24 fps for video and has no frame-rate selector for 18 fps.
Can I remove the date by choosing BORDER NONE?
No. NONE removes the frame decoration, while the current-date stamp remains in the video export. The app does not currently provide a working date-off option for video.
Can GrainGleam scan a physical Super 8 reel?
No. It processes digital images and video. Have the reel transferred separately, then import the digital video if you want to apply an additional treatment.
See it on your own camera. GrainGleam runs the film simulation as a live shader on your phone's camera. Nothing is uploaded — the look is computed on the device, frame by frame.
