A film look on a phone camera
Phone cameras are engineered to produce a bright, sharp, saturated image straight out of the shutter, which is almost exactly the opposite of what a film look wants. Getting film out of a phone is mostly a matter of undoing that intent — and of applying the look at the right point in the pipeline.
What the phone is doing before you see anything
Between the sensor and the preview, a modern phone stacks multiple exposures, aligns and merges them, applies local tone mapping to lift shadows and hold highlights, sharpens aggressively, and boosts saturation. The result is an image with almost no tonal drama, edges that are sharper than any lens produced, and a look tuned for a small bright screen. Every one of those steps works against a film look, and the ones you can turn off usually should be.
Apply the look before the phone finishes, not after
This is the reason a live shader beats an editing filter on a phone. If you shoot normally and grade afterwards, you are grading an image that has already been sharpened, tone-mapped and saturated, and those decisions cannot be undone. Applying the transformation to the camera feed means the film curve operates on relatively raw light values, and the grain sits below the sharpening rather than on top of it. Practically: what you see in the preview is what you get, and it looks right for the same reason.
Settings worth changing
Turn off any beauty or scene-optimisation mode — they remap skin and sky specifically and will fight any grade. Turn off HDR if you can, or at least be aware that it flattens exactly the contrast a film look depends on. Lock exposure rather than letting it drift during a shot, since automatic exposure changes mid-take look nothing like film. And use the main wide lens where possible: ultrawide and telephoto modules on most phones are smaller and noisier, and their extra processing shows through the look.
Working with phone limitations rather than against them
Phone sensors are small, which means deep depth of field and noise in low light. Rather than fight both, shoot in decent light and use the depth of field: film photography of the era people are imitating was often shot at f/8 with everything sharp, so a deep-focus phone frame is closer to that than a portrait-mode blur. And accept a little noise in dim scenes — with grain applied over it in the right proportion, it reads as fast film rather than as a phone struggling.

Does portrait mode help make a film look?
Rarely. Artificial background blur has hard edges and a uniform quality that no lens produces, and it tends to collapse under the contrast a film grade adds. Real shallow depth of field from a close subject and a distant background works far better.
Is a film look worth it for video on a phone?
Yes, and more than for stills, because video shows motion blur and grain over time — two things that read as film immediately. The main constraint is shutter speed: if the app lets you set it to roughly double the frame rate, do.
Will this drain my battery?
Running a shader on every frame does cost power, as does keeping the camera active. In practice it is comparable to any camera app doing live processing, and it is the price of seeing the real look while you shoot rather than guessing.
Does the film look work as well from the front camera?
Usually not as well, because the front sensor is smaller and beauty processing is more aggressive; use the rear camera and a beauty mode you can disable whenever possible.
