Colour grading basics for a film look
Most of what people call a film look is a colour relationship rather than a colour. Once you can see how shadows, midtones and highlights are being pushed in different directions, you can build the look deliberately with three or four moves instead of hunting through presets.
The three zones, and why they are graded separately
Grading tools divide the image into lift (shadows), gamma (midtones) and gain (highlights). This division exists because film does not shift colour uniformly: a stock might carry a green-cyan cast in the shadows, neutral skin in the midtones and warm highlights, all at once. Adjusting overall colour balance cannot produce that, which is why a photo tinted warm looks orange and a photo graded warm looks like film. Learn to look at an image and name what each zone is doing before touching anything.
Split toning: the single most useful move
Push the shadows one way and the highlights the opposite way and the image immediately gains depth. Cool shadows with warm highlights is the classic combination — it mimics both daylight film and the way our eyes read shade as blue and sun as gold. The reverse, warm shadows with cool highlights, produces the slightly sickly, nostalgic feel used in period work. Keep both moves small: a few degrees of hue and a little saturation is usually enough, and if the split is obvious it will look like a filter.
Contrast is a curve, not a slider
Raising a contrast slider stretches everything away from middle grey and clips both ends. Film instead compresses the extremes: it rolls off highlights gently and lifts the deepest blacks slightly, which is why film blacks are rarely pure black. Reproducing that means an S-curve with a soft shoulder and a lifted toe — the lifted black point in particular is what makes an image read as a print rather than a screen. It also has to survive on a phone screen in daylight, so avoid crushing shadows to nothing.
Saturation is not one control
Film does not saturate everything equally. Skin tones stay relatively restrained while greens and blues shift and intensify, which is why a filmic frame can look rich without looking cartoonish. Working with per-hue saturation rather than a global slider is the difference between a graded image and a boosted one. If you only remember one rule: protect skin, let the environment carry the colour.

What is the difference between colour correction and grading?
Correction is making the image technically neutral and consistent — fixing white balance and exposure so all shots match. Grading is the creative layer applied afterwards. Doing them in the wrong order is why some looks fall apart across a set of photos: grade before correcting and every frame drifts differently.
Should I grade before or after adding grain?
Grade first, add grain last. Grain applied before grading gets pushed around by the colour transform and can turn coloured or blotchy; applied last, it sits on top of the finished image the way it sits in a print.
Why does my grade look different on another screen?
Because phone screens vary in white point and brightness, and many apply their own contrast enhancement. Judge a grade on more than one device, and be suspicious of any look that only works at full brightness in a dark room.
What is the fastest way to make a look more filmic without wrecking skin tones?
Keep split toning small first, then work saturation per hue instead of globally; skin mostly lives in the red-orange range, and leaving that range alone is the single move that makes the biggest difference.
